A 2020 survey of 2000 individuals in the US and Canada shows that “USDA Organic” and “Non-GMP Project Verified” are the most recognizable and sought-after certifications on food products. Among the 15 certification marks that appear on food products, 63% of consumers recognize USDA Organic and 54% recognize the Non-GMO Project butterfly logo. The next most recognized certification was Gluten-Free (32%) and then Fair Trade (30%).

The survey also examined 2020 non-GMO consumers and those who will be non-GMO consumers “tomorrow” (i.e., now). The 2020 non-GMO consumers were primarily women (75% versus 25% men), older (42% between the ages of 55 and 74), and well-educated. They wanted “clean” foods that are processed as little as possible and worried about the long-term impacts of GMOs. 

Meanwhile, “tomorrow’s” non-GMO consumers are still mostly women (54% versus 46% men), younger (81% are between the ages of 18 and 54), and even more educated (38% have college degrees).
